Sermon Theme: "I Don't Have Anyone"

Text: John 5:1–18
Introduction
Good morning, Church. Today, I invite you to turn with me to the Gospel of John 5:1–18, where we encounter a man whose cry resonates with so many of us today: "I don't have Anyone to help me." This was the man's response when Jesus asked, “Do you want to be made whole?”
In our society today, we often see the imbalance between the rich and the poor, the sick and the suffering, the well-to-do, and the marginalized groups. It was no different in Jesus's day when He encountered this man. Jesus' encounter with this man reflects his hopelessness, loneliness, and dependence on human help that failed him for 38 long years.
This message also speaks to anyone who feels abandoned, forgotten, imprisoned, marginalized or powerless. It reminds us of the One who steps in when there is no man to help us— Jesus, the ultimate helper, healer, and friend.
I. A Place of Mercy (John 5:1-5)
Bethesda means “House of Mercy,” and yet the man found himself in a condition that seemed anything but merciful. The pool, thought to be stirred by an angel, was surrounded by a multitude of the sick, the lame, the paralyzed, and the blind—people were all waiting for something they could never attain on their own.
38 years of infirmity had left him immobilized. No one had helped him into the pool. He had no friends, no family, and no advocate.
This man’s cry, "I don't have anyone to help me," highlights how human relationships, while valuable, can fail us in our greatest time of need.
II. A Question and a Command (John 5:6-9)
When Jesus saw him lying there, He asked, “Do you want to get well?” At first glance, this seems unnecessary. Of course, he wanted to be well! But Jesus’ question forced the man to articulate his need and recognize the true source of healing—not the pool, but the One standing before him.
Jesus sought out the one man in need amidst a crowd. He steps into our personal pain, even when others overlook us.
Jesus didn’t need the water. His words, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk,” carried authority to transform a 38-year-old condition instantly. The Words of Jesus has power even up to this day.
III. The Cry of a Broken World: "I Don't Have anyone to help me"
Like this man, many in our society today cry out for help and companionship. They feel forgotten, powerless, and isolated.
The addict cries, “I don't have anyone to help me break free.”
The lonely widow cries, “I don't have anyone to comfort me.”
The prisoner cries, “I don't have anyone to give me another chance.”
Today, Jesus answers your cry of “I don't have anyone to help me” by saying, “Here I am.”
Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you.”
Psalm 68:5-6: God is a father to the fatherless and sets the lonely in families.
IV. From Hopelessness to Wholeness
After his healing, the man was confronted by the religious leaders who cared more about their Sabbath laws than the miracle of his transformation. But Jesus was not deterred. He sought the man out again and urged him to stop sinning, showing that His concern went beyond physical healing to spiritual restoration.
Healing is more than physical. Jesus’ ultimate goal is to restore us wholly—body, mind, and soul.
The man was warned not to return to sin, reminding us that physical or spiritual deliverance should lead to a transformed life.
Application: Answering the Cry Around Us
Be that "Man" for Others:
Jesus has called us to step into the gap for those crying, “I don't have anyone to help me.” We are His hands and feet in the world.
Visit the sick.
Visit the prisoners.
Offer friendship to the lonely.
Share the Good News with the brokenhearted.
Turn to Jesus First:
When human help fails, remember that Jesus never does. Let us place our faith in the One who hears the cry of every heart.
Point Others to Christ:
Ultimately, only Jesus can offer the eternal healing and hope people long for. Our role is to guide others to Him.
Closing Thoughts
The man at Bethesda felt abandoned for 38 years, but in one moment with Jesus, his life was changed forever. If today you feel like crying, “I don't have anyone to help me,” Jesus invites you to trust in Him. He hears, He cares, and He steps into our brokenness with healing and hope.
As we leave today, may we remember: that where there is no man, God is present. And where God is present, there is mercy, hope, and healing. Let us bring that presence to a hurting world.
Let us Pray
Father, open our ears to hear those who are crying "I don't have anyone to help me" and help us to become that man for others, in whatever their circumstances are. To guide them to Jesus the master Healer, helper, and comforter.
